Holly’s Review of The Silent Patient

Ever witnessed something so incredulous that you could not speak anymore?

I pretty much experience this every day and it is usually because of my sister’s yapping.

But for Alicia Berenson, she decides to never speak again after shooting her husband five times in the face. Because men are trash, I guess?

So, this lady, Alicia, lands in a top-notch forensic unit called the Grove in North London. Along comes our main man, Theo Faber, who’s so smitten by her that he’s like, “I’ll be your therapist and fix that whole ‘not speaking’ thing.” Doesn’t get more Hero Syndrome than this...

Theo’s obsession with getting her to speak takes him on a wild ride. He’s like Sherlock Holmes trying to crack the case, but little does he know, he’s about to dive headfirst into a pool of his own issues. Cue the drama and a quest for truth that might just make Theo lose his mind in the process!

The Silent Patient Ending Explained

A shocking twist of The Silent Patient revealed

Turns out, we learn that the night Alicia shot her husband, Theo was there.

In fact, the days leading to the murder, Theo has been stalking Alicia. He would visit her house regularly, at any time of the day. Now, you would think Alicia would tell her husband. And that, she did, but he would never believe her as Alicia had a history of mental health issues.

So, she was stuck facing this alone, documenting her experiences in a diary.

Fast forward to the day of the crime, Alicia and Gabriel are tied to a chair. A man dressed in black decides to make a gruesome deal with Gabriel: he must pick who dies, himself or Alicia.

“I didn’t kill Gabriel. Gabriel killed me. All I did was pull the trigger.”

Gabriel decides to pick himself over Alicia.

The ultimate betrayal.

The strange man is amused by Gabriel’s response and the reason for that is because that man is actually Theo.

On the days leading up to the death of Gabriel, not only was Theo stalking Alicia, he had also found out his wife was having an affair with Gabriel.

My Final Thoughts

“The Silent Patient” is a thrilling rollercoaster ride through the human psyche. It’s like diving headfirst into a whirlpool of mysteries, where every twist keeps you hooked until the very end. The way the story unravels the enigmatic silence of Alicia is both captivating and chilling. It’s a psychological maze where you’re constantly reevaluating what you think you know.

The narrative’s depth lies not just in the plot but in the characters themselves, especially Theo, whose own motivations and struggles add layers to the already intricate story. The book delves into the complexities of the human mind, exploring the shadows of trauma, obsession, and the lengths we go to for understanding and redemption.

Ultimately, it’s a hauntingly brilliant exploration of the human condition, leaving you contemplating the thin line between sanity and madness. It’s the kind of story that lingers in your thoughts long after you’ve closed the book—a testament to its gripping storytelling and thought-provoking themes.
